Leading from the front, captain Steven Smith smashed an unbeaten 79-run knock to lead Rajasthan Royals to a seven-wicket victory over Mumbai Indians in their IPL match at Sardar Patel Stadium in Ahmedabad on Tuesday.
The Royals run chase got off to a bad start as they lost opener Sanju Samson in the fifth over, but the other opener Ajinkya Rahane steadied the ship with a 46-run knock.
But the dismissals of Rahane and Deepak Hooda in successive overs put the Royals in a spot of bother, before Smith and James Faulkner teamed up to guide their team to victory.
Smith and Rahane laid the foundation by finding gaps with a precise timing. Even after Rahane was dismissed, Smith played with a calm head on his shoulders to score a fifty and steer them home.
In the 17th over, Smith took on the gauntlet of facing up to Lasith Malinga and collected three boundaries as Mumbai suffered their third loss in a row.
Earlier, Pollard and Anderson struck fighting half-centuries as Mumbai recovered from a sluggish start to post a respectable 164/5.
The decision to bat seemed to have backfired as Mumbai managed only 45 runs in the first 10 overs but the fiery 104-run stand between Pollard and Anderson in just 9.1 overs, changed the team’s fortunes.
